Today is the first day of an exciting Exhibition
The Gaskells’ House by Simon Jones
Dotted around the rooms of the Gaskells’ House a series of images can be found that reveal glimpses of what could be described as “the building’s memory”. Fragments of narratives, buildings and past inhabitants and visitors can be seen to emerge from under the floorboards and skirting boards. These images are not in any particular order, nor are they any kind of bold statement. They are a rather more a quiet reminder from the house of what it has taken part in.
Simon became interested in the idea of creating artwork at the Gaskells’ House some time ago. Noticing the blue plaque through the misty window of a bus and finding out who lived there, it became a haunting site that somehow maintained its demeanour after all this time. However, after many years of passing the house daily on the way to University and then work, it was the sight of scaffolding and the beginnings of its renovation that finally incited him to approach the Gaskells’ House about making artwork in the house.
Simon Jones is an award winning photographic artist whose work is often concerned with memory and domestic spaces. He regularly exhibits nationally.
We also have new displays on the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell, the history of the house and a look at future plans. On the Open Dayshere are talks, tours , the book-shop selling new Gaskell related books and a varied selection of second- hand books. And don’t forget to sample our delicious home-made cakes with tea or coffee served in our delightful china cups and saucers. Mrs G. would have approved!
Do come along there is so much to see! Entrance £1, children free.
